Mt Vesuvius is the most famous volcano in the world, an icon of the city, that embraces with its perfect shape the gulf of Naples.

Up on the majestic cone there is a disquieting and suggestive atmosphere. Its rough landscape of wild beauty makes this place the ideal destination for mountain bike lovers.

From the top of the volcano you will have a wide view stretching from the Sorrentine Peninsula to Capo Posillipo.

The close network of many and varied tracks winding along the slopes of the volcano satisfies the likings and needs of any biker.

Vesuvius is the only active volcano on mainland Europe. The summit to the left is that of Mount Somma (1133 m), and the one to the right is the cone of Vesuvius (1281m). They are separated by a valley called ‘Valle del Gigante’ (Valley of the Giant), in turn subdivided into ‘Atrio del Cavallo’ (Hall of the Horse, West) and ‘Valle dell’Inferno’ (Valley of Hell, East). The original inhabitants had forgotten that they were dealing with a volcano: it was known solely for its excellent wines and for the thick vegetation that covered its summit. It became suddenly famous when, in 79 AD, it erupted. Entire cities, among which Pompeii and Herculaneum, were destroyed.

In 1944 there was the last eruption, filmed by the allied forces. Since then the volcano has been sleeping.

In 1991 the institution of Vesuvius National Park was decreed and the “World Biosphere Reserve” status was given to it by Unesco.

The varied and luxuriant vegetation of the area around Vesuvius gives mountain bike enthusiasts many tracks winding along a typical Mediterranean vegetation, with pine forests, holm oak woods, chestnut, oak, alder and sycamore woods.
